This limited edition giclée print uses the narrative arc of the life of Hollywood actress Judy Garland’s as a lens to unpack the increasing ‘capability gap’ in creativity, innovation & emotional range within the US military and intelligence agencies after 9/11. Like the exhibition it takes its name from, this artwork explores the mythology of American exceptionalism, a state of thinking that we have all experienced as ‘normal until quite recently’. After 9/11 perceptions of the US have undergone many changes. The Assassination of Judy Garland celebrates the best of America in the messy but inspiring artistic life of Judy Garland (known for ‘Dorothy’ in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz) who asks us in 2013 (and perhaps also in 2023), “how did America lose its exceptional creativity and inspiring heart?” There are many posts, interviews and publications about this painting which I encourage you to read in my Studio and Media blogs.
