The Assassination of Judy Garland 2013
Solo Exhibition 2013, Smartspace, Western Australia
"The Assassination of Judy Garland - A Metaphorical Portrait of America - is a prophetic reflection on American political and cultural mythologies from the 1930s, 40s & 50s, through the lens of queer exceptionalism, in the post-9/11 era. It was a significant undertaking, taking over 5 years to complete, with extensive collaboration, interviews, and research. Through this outward-looking body of work, I aimed to contribute to the global dialogue on issues that affect all our lives. It is a historical reflection of a particular time, the people, hopes & beliefs of that era.
To create the series, I immersed myself in ‘America’, incorporating magazine illustrations and book covers from the 20th century into my 'post-folk' style. I pushed my technique, experimenting with traditional painting, digital screens, and silkscreen printing. I delved into French medieval literature and the Chanson de Geste, guided by renowned Australian translator Michael Newth.. In fact, I had the pleasure of working with Michael and international voice actor Greg Marston to produce an audio book of the Song of Roland. The series also drew inspiration from William Blake's America A Prophecy, which continues to influence my work. The images sparked an international discussion, including at a workshop on international intervention at the University of Surrey in 2012. I invite you to read interviews about the series in Tikkun Daily and The Qouch" or visit my Hitting the Target page. >>next gallery. >>former website text.
