Room 2. 2015-19

Exhibition in Progress

Room 2 showcases paintings completed in Melbourne, Australia between 2015 and 2019, prior to the Covid-19 pandemic. These works explore communities and stories impacted by social cohesion disruptions that arose from counter-terrorism incidents and my work in community policy and advocacy. The images evoke the rise of far-right radicalization on social media, exposure to Islamophobia, and the power of myth-making by researchers, government, and the media. During this time, my father's declining health added poignancy to the pressures, and I was busy at work. Although I built up many sketches and ideas during this period that I am continuing to work through, I have fewer completed works to display in this exhibit. Therefore, this period will be showcased in a separate room of my upcoming solo exhibition. I'm reminded of the words of the late US academic S. Paige Baty, who wrote in 1995 that "the dead are some of the most powerful figures in the virtual realm," a sentiment that still resonates today. >>next gallery
