Stockholm Syndrome 2000
2000 Studio Exhibition, Collingwood, Melbourne, VIC
Stockholm Syndrome is a collection of paintings that holds a special place in my heart. I exhibited these works at a private studio exhibition in Collingwood, Melbourne, just days after the horrific events of 9/11. This was a time of great upheaval and fear, both in my own personal life and in the world at large. The exhibition was full of personal experiences that were difficult for me to share in a gallery setting. As I grappled with my own trauma and the world seemed to spiral into chaos, I found solace in my art. Through painting, I could express my deepest emotions and find a sense of peace amidst the turmoil.
As I reflect on that time, I am reminded of a quote by Vincent van Gogh: "I am seeking, I am striving, I am in it with all my heart." That is precisely how I felt during the creation of Stockholm Syndrome. Each brushstroke was a sometimes broken attempt at bravery, a step towards healing and reclaiming my power. Looking back, I can see how every street in Collingwood was alive with living art. The energy of the community was palpable, and it gave me the courage to push past my own fears and share my work with the world. Stockholm Syndrome remains a diary of my journey of recovery and transformation, and I hope it can inspire others to find strength in their own struggles.
