My oral history for the State Library of Western Australia archives, July 2023

Photo copyright Les Allester 1992. Bridge Gallery Staff left to right: Carl Gopalkrishnan and Jenny Bride (gallery assistants), Paula Shewcuck (Photography Gallery Director) and Gary Tait owner and Director of Bridge Gallery. Located in William Street, Northbridge, Western Australia.

In 2022 I was invited to provide an oral history for the State Library of Western Australia’s (SLWA) LGBTIQ+ history project. We kept having to put it off, so it was really good to finally film that on 15th June 2023 this year. It has now been uploaded to the library catalogue. I was interviewed by (and really thank) Helena Cohen-Robertson of Know Your Nation inside the auditorium of the State Library and the final video and transcript can be accessed through the Library’s online catalogue along with other individuals also interviewed for their Community and Connections: LGBTQIA+ stories in Western Australia.

There are not a lot of photos of me back in the clubs of 1983, but here is a pen and ink drawing I did one night after a night out at The Clarendon Hotel. © copyright Carl Gopalkrishnan 2024

Carl Gopalkrishnan (aka Gopal)

Over the past two decades, Carl Gopalkrishnan's artwork has garnered international recognition for his ability to forge meaningful connections between the cultural narratives found in art and literature & the complex dynamics driving international law, intervention and global conflict. Through his art, Carl provides a platform for legal and military analysts to explore the creative, subconscious and emotional nuances underlying the doctrines that influence matters of war and peace. His paintings continue to foster constructive dialogues about the role of creativity in shaping our world.
